With a couple of tournaments approaching, many of you have been asking about the best methods for building a mallet. While there is no ‘ultimate’ solution, there have been plenty of new and lighter methods of attaching a mallet head to a shaft in the recent months. First up, here’s a pretty good video put together by some guys from Lancaster United Bike Polo. I’ve been using this method for a while now and its amazing. The only downside is that the nut is not a standard piece that can be found at your local hardware store (although it can be bought on the fixcraft site). I normally substitute this nut with a plastic ramset plug (normally for use in a brick wall) which still work reasonably well. Check out the video below, and head over to a great written summary is found on the 321polo.net blog.

There are plenty of other systems out there, including the traditional and simple long side screw or bolt method. If you can’t be bothered to build one, there are plenty of little companies putting together kits or new systems made to be easily replaced on the fly.

Sydney Bike Polo held a Australia Day Mix-Up Tournament which produced a great day of polo, drinks and shenanigans. First off, thanks to Virginia for organizing the food and general tournament structure and items! Thanks also to the crowd and friends that turned up to watch and chillax. Unfortunately some of our players had various family functions to attend, but we managed to have 22 players register and play. Overall, it was a great day of polo that was nice and relaxed. I would like to thank all the players for there good nature and courtesy that was shown on the court, it was beautiful to see so many faced intense games without the need for a ref.

Below are a few pictures and the stats of the top 12 ranked players and finals results. This post will update eventually with a full list of results and more pics on the weekend.

The idea is to help out new players without mallets and reduce ‘doubling-up’ of some one using more than one mallet to sneak a few extra games in. Each player that comes down has a paddle-pop stick and magnet. Sticks are drawn out randomly for each team, then each game is easily posted up on a magnetic board for everyone to see. Easy to see your place with with 4 games back-to-back! Supplies purchase from the local stationary store for under $25 and it easily fits in a bag!

When thinking about where in the world would have the best courts, usually the first ones that come to mind are obviously East Vancouver’s polo specific court (first built in the world) and maybe New York’s “The Pit”.

The third would have to be Molitor in France, which has been used for numerous photo shoots and magazine spreads. It’s easy to see why. The tight court with its ‘derelicte’ setting, balconies over the court and of course the endless graffiti make it an impressive sight. As far as I know, the court used to be a pool which explains the unfortunate slope, but the great side walls more than make up for that!
